Production

Over half of Jersey’s total land area is in agricultural or horticultural use, which means it is no surprise that agriculture is one of Jersey’s largest industries. Jersey Royal new potatoes account for the vast majority of the island’s fresh produce exports.

Depending on the climate during the growing season (January to July), the island exports approximately 25 millions packs of Jersey Royals per year. At the peak of production in May, up to 1,000 tonnes are exported daily, with pickers working twelve hour shifts so that the Jersey Royals can reach supermarket shelves as fresh as possible.

Outside Jersey, mainland Britain is the only place where you can buy Jersey Royals. They are at their most plentiful and flavoursome from April to July, and can be purchased from most supermarkets and independent grocery retailers.

Albert Bartlett

With a legacy dating back to 1948, Albert Bartlett has consistently upheld the highest standards of quality and sustainability by working closely with seven dedicated island farmers, who cultivate these prized potatoes across 5,000 vergées. Many of the farmers are fourth or fifth generation and still employ some of the most traditional methods of farming such as using beach-gathered seaweed, known as Vraic, as a natural fertiliser on the field. Once harvested, the potatoes are carefully checked before being washed, hydro-cooled, and packed. Albert Bartlett’s commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship ensures that each Jersey Royal potato is not only delicious but also grown with a respect for nature and heritage.
